Surgery

IMG_4024Elective and emergency surgeries are performed right in our hospital including; soft tissue, orthopedic, skin grafts and laser surgery.

We have 2 fully equipped dedicated surgery suites for sterile procedures (i.e. all surgeons are scrubbed in, and both surgeons and assistants must wear caps, gowns and masks). We have 5 isoflurane anesthesia machines and a variety of monitoring equipment. The safety of every anesthetized patient is our highest priority. We have 2 automatic Blood Pressure monitors as well as a direct monitor called a Doppler and electrocardiograms for cardiac monitoring. We also have fluid administration pumps that regulate the flow of I.V. fluids for any animal requiring them. All animals undergoing a surgical procedure receive IV fluids which are monitored by a registered veterinary technician or assistant.

At times we will use a surgical laser for a procedure. In many cases using the laser is a better option than the traditional use of a blade and scissors in some cases, because it enables us to perform blood free surgery. Many skin growths, suspected cancerous growths or mast cell tumors, are best removed using a bloodless technique.

Pre- and post-surgical pain control is an area of highest priority at SylvaniaVET. To this end, most of our surgical cases have pain medication administered with their anesthesia injection. Many pets receive injections of potent narcotics during and after surgery. Frequently, a local anesthetic is injected at the surgical site. Every cat has its paws injected with a local anesthetic before a declaw procedure. For painful procedures, such as an orthopedic procedure, we use a continuous rate infusion of Fentynal or other drugs before, during and after the surgery.

Most surgical and many medical cases will have pain medication dispensed to take home. Your pet’s comfort during and after a procedure is always on our mind. At SylvaniaVET pain control is not optional. Animals feel pain, don’t let anyone tell you differently. We encourage you to use the entire pain control prescription we dispense as pets feel pain but may not show it.
