Stem Cell Therapy is an alternative way to treat severe osteoarthritis, or acute injury in dogs. During stem cell therapy treatment, first the affected joints are identified. Then, time is scheduled to remove several small vials of fat from your dog, where it is treated in a sterile lab and the stem cells are extracted. Fat is a better source of stem cells than bone marrow, because it contains up to 500x more stem cells per gram. Also, the stem cells are directly from your own dog, so there is no risk of stem cell rejection. Two days after the fat is collected, using an ultrasound to ensure proper placement, the stem cells are injected into your dog’s joints. The goal of stem cell therapy is to repair damaged joints, decrease inflammation, minimize the amount of medication your dog needs to remain comfortable, and improve your dog’s overall quality of life.
