SANTA-PET PICTURES HAPPENED LAST MONTH.
We would like to thank Gerri Leonard for taking such fabulous pictures with our very cool new background. Though our goal was 100 sittings and we only did 53, the day was a great success. Over $600 was raised for the Memories Live on Animal Foundation. Thanks to the many dedicated staff members that donated their time to make our event a roaring success.
DR NATALIE AND HER HUSBAND JJ ADDED A NEW ADDITION TO THEIR FAMILY.
Emerson Elise was born on 11/22 at 5:30pm. She was 8 pounds and measured 20.75 inches long. Congratulations!
OUR DOUBLE DIP NEW CLIENT REFERRAL INCENTIVE RUNS THROUGH THE MONTH.
Our clients are our best advertising and we want to thank you. Normally if you refer a new pet owner to us we reward you with a $20 credit to your account. Until year end we have doubled this incentive to $40 per new referral. Aggressive referring can earn you enough credit to pay for a great portion of your pet(s) yearly care. Why not become a RAVING AMBASSADOR of SylvaniaVET and reap the rewards?
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL AIRS A PROGRAM ABOUT A VET, DR POL.
In a nut shell his approach to modern veterinary medicine is archaic and abysmal. Why a network of such high standing would promote substandard care by a veterinarian is beyond the professions understanding. Dr. Pol's handling of a severally injured Boston terrier has been deemed barbaric and inhumane. Dr. Pol is licensed in Michigan and is under investigation for malpractice. The only way to send a message to National Geographic is to not watch the program.
Other members of the staff will work rotating schedules so that our patients and boarding guests get the 24/7 care they deserve. Hopefully your pets stay healthy throughout the holiday period but never hesitate to call, 419-885-4421, should a problem arise.

Just ask any front desk person and they will be able to provide the certificate.
ONSET OF COLD WINTER WEATHER DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD STOP MONTHLY HEARTWORM PREVENTION.
Even though exposure is not likely unless we have a January-February warm up, the need for year round consistency is important. New strains of heartworm require that for full protection at least three consecutive months of prevention are necessary to insure protection from the mosquito transmitted heartworm larva.
SYLVANIAVET DOES NOT DO FARM WORK BUT THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN A DISEASE THAT IS KILLING NEWLY BORN PIGS.
In the last year over 7 million neonate pigs have died of porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). This virus disease has no cure and there is no vaccine. This kind of disease could cause an increase in pork prices. Increased bacon prices, now there is a concern. Recently, a vaccine has received conditional approval.
ACCESS BY CONSUMERS TO ADVANCE GENERATION ANTICOAGULANT RODENTACIDES HAS BEEN RESTRICTED BY THE EPA.
A major concern about the advanced d.con like products is that children and wildlife can be affected. Since the new regulations took effect in 2011, fewer children have been poisoned by products like brodifacoum. All the anticoagulant rodenticide has an antidote, Vitamin K. Another rodent toxin, bromethalin has not antidote and poses a severe risk to pets, wildlife and children if ingested. We suggest that if you have a mouse or rat problem you use traps and other less toxic methods of eliminating the problem. There is a great argument for having cats as pets.
IF YOUR PET HAS BEEN PUT ON A DIET IT MUST BE FED THE AMOUNT OF CALORIES NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE ITS OPTIMAL WEIGHT.
You cannot gradually decrease the daily calories using stepping stone weight reduction if you expect your dog or cat to lose weight. We will help you determine the optimal weight using the metabolic diet measuring system. We recommend you strongly consider using metabolic diet when we recommend weight loss for your pet.
BUPRENORPHINE PAIN MEDICATION WAS COMPARED TO BUTORPHANOL PAIN MEDICATION AND FOUND TO BE SUPERIOR.
We use the former pain medication, Buprenex, and were pleased to learn that our decision to use this medication was our best choice. Torbutrol is the other medication and has very short and limited benefits in pain control.
A RECENT STUDY OF PET FOOD LABELING FOUND 16 OF 52 PRODUCTS TESTED CONTAINED MEAT INGREDIENTS NOT LISTED ON THE LABEL.
This is obviously a concern if a dog or cat has an allergy or hypersensitivity to a certain meat. The article discussed this issue as one of mislabeling which could easily be true. However, they did not discuss two issues which we feel might also be considered. Poor quality control at the point of manufacture - If a production line is not totally shut down and thoroughly cleaned, some residual from the previous batch could easily be included in the next product. Likewise the government allows manufacturers to change ingredients without changing labels as long as the changed ingredient remains in the same position on the label and the labeled meat or grain. This is one of the many reasons we encourage you to buy food from nutrition companies producing high quality premium foods, Hills, Iams, Nestle Purina and Royal Canin. These companies use stable nutrient sources.
A NEW LAW IN CALIFORNIA WILL ENABLE CONSUMERS LOOKING TO BUY PET HEALTH INSURANCE AN EASIER TIME BY STANDARDIZING MANY TERMS, PROVIDING A TRIAL PERIOD AND PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A POLICY.
Expect all the changes to be in effect by July 1, 2015. We encourage you to look into pet health insurance. There are many companies and all are not alike or equal. This law may make it easier to choose the policy just right for you. Many more of our clients are using pet health insurance.
YOUNG GOLDEN RETRIEVERS, LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD, ARE NEEDED BY MORRIS ANIMAL FOUNDATION TO BE ENROLLED IN THEIR LIFETIME STUDY.
There are 1900 golden retrievers enrolled but Morris needs 1100 more. The lifetime study is for 12 years. We have at least one dog enrolled and would love to get several more. You may learn more and apply to participate in the study at caninelifetimehealth.org.
STUDY SHOWS THAT THERE IS NOTHING LIKE MOTHERS MILK.
Puppy milk replacements were studied and compared to the real thing and all were found lacking to some degree. "All products tested would benefit from more appropriate calcium, amino acids and essential fatty acids concentrations and better feeding directions" the study showed.
MAYO CLINIC STUDY SUGGESTS THAT PETS INFLUENCE OWNER'S SLEEP.
Many respondents to the study at the Mayo sleep clinic did not deem their pets cause an intolerable disturbance to their sleep. Disturbances included snoring, whining, whimpering, wandering, the need to go out, and medical needs.
DID YOU KNOW THAT WE SPONSOR AND STAFF A WELLNESS CLINIC AT PETCO ON MONROE STREET EVERY MONDAY?
None of our doctors feel this is a great way to deliver veterinary care but understand it is a long road to educating all pet owners to the importance of a complete and thorough professional exam versus just getting vaccinations. For us the Petco Healthy Pet Wellness Clinic is an opportunity to meet pet owners that seem to value vaccines over the far more important annual consultation and exam. There are other venues that also offer reduced cost vaccination clinics. Most of them are staffed by licensed but roving veterinarians that once done leave the area. They are not here or even available should the pet they just gave shots to have any problems. At least the Petco clinic is staffed by our 24/7 full time staff. So while we educate the vaccines are the most important as aspect of a pet visit client to the necessity of a complete exam, including weight and temperature, please use Petco and not other locations.
WE RECOMMEND A VARIETY OF HEARTWORM, FLEA AND TICK PRODUCTS ONE OF WHICH IS TRIFEXIS.
The amount of internet negativity to Trifexis was triggered by an Atlanta TV station covering a death of a dog that was blamed on it being given Trifexis. This report has proven to have created a firestorm of blog posts and internet comments. As of this writing a few facts can be stated; the dog in the original story had multiple problems and no one, including the pet's vet, felt that Trifexis was to blame for the death. A complete necropsy was not performed. The FDA and well as the manufacturer, Elanco, do not feel that any of the reported deaths of dogs are related to Trifexis. Not all pets can or should take Trifexis. We do not recommend Trifexis for dogs with a history of seizures. Other oral products on the market also have similar warnings. In a nut shell we feel Trifexis is safe.
One fact we will acknowledge is that the pill is not the most palatable oral medication on our shelf. If your dog likes the chewable pill or you can give it to him/her then Trifexis is a great product against heartworm, fleas and internal parasites. One final tidbit about Trifexis, a study in Japan has shown efficacy against ticks but it is not labels for this affect in the US. We have a great letter from Elanco addressing the issues of Trifexis safety.
THE HOLIDAY SEASON MEANS THAT WE ARE IN A GIVING MOOD AND THAT WE ARE MAKING DONATIONS THAT CAN BE DEDUCTED FROM OUR 2014 TAXES.

MICROCHIPPING YOUR PET IS A GREAT IDEA.
The chip enables us to quickly find the owner of an unidentified lost pet. Recently, Dr. Bob's wife found a dog wandering back and forth across a busy street. She was able to load it up and brought it to the office. It had a microchip that the humane society had inserted. The chip had never been registered to the new owner. Fortunately, Carol cruised around the area where the dog was found and located the owner. The cost for microchipping is $37.75 and a great buy. This would be a terrific holiday gift for any pet owning family member.
CATS AND DOGS WITH KIDNEY INSUFFIENCY OR FAILURE BENEFIT GREATLY FROM EATING A KIDNEY FRIENDLY DIET.
Studies have shown that renal disease pets live four times longer if they eat diets designed to help the kidneys deal with the loss of normal function. Our first recommendation is Hills K/D but we have three other products that can be tried. Feeding a kidney friendly diet before the kidneys deteriorate does not slow down the loss of function.
IF YOUR DOG IS FEARFUL WHEN IT COMES TO THE OFFICE WE SUGGEST YOU HOLD OFF FEEDING IT UNTIL YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY.
Put its dry food in a baggy and start feeding it one nugget at a time during the trip and visit. This will create positive associations for your dog when it visits the hospital. Look for other suggestions in future blogs.
A REMINDER ABOUT A SYLVANIAVET SERVICE THAT IS NOT TALKED ABOUT MUCH.
We sponsor a grief counseling group meeting the second Tuesday of each month from 7-8:30 PM at Christ Presbyterian Church, located at Talmadge and Sylvania. There is an open invitation to all that are struggling or hurting over the loss of a pet. You do not need to be a client to attend. There is a trained pet loss grief counselor that leads a meeting full of mostly joy and a little sadness. You may learn more on Facebook by searching Pet Loss Support Group.
SANTA WAS SURPRISED HOW MANY DOGS CAME TO OUR ANNUAL PICTURE SESSION ATTACHED TO A RETRACTABLE LEASH.
You are doing neither yourself nor your dog a favor when you go out in public with a retractable leash. Any distance over six feet from you when walking is too far for you to have control of your pet. No qualified trainer or behaviorist recommends using a retractable leash when walking your pet. Next time you are in check out our line of Lupine leashes so you can properly walk your dog. Lupine leashes are guaranteed for life. Lupine leashes and collars, another great holiday gift suggestion.
LIKE THE FAMOUS LINE FROM APOLLO 13, "HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM", WE ALSO HAVE A PROBLEM KEEPING OUR APPOINTMENTS ON TIME.
We value your time and do everything that we can to stay on time. We have all had the experience at other professional offices where we have had long waits with not one word of apology. That is not how we want to treat you.
There are many reasons why we can get behind and keep you waiting. Unlike modern human medicine where there is very little time that you actually see and converse with the doctor, we schedule at least 20 minute appointments and the doctor is there much of that time. You get our full time attention and we answer all of your questions. While all of you, including us, consider this commitment to thoroughness to each visit a positive, it can put us behind. Emergencies obviously take priority, and sometimes surgeries and treatments will last longer than planned. Many professional offices double book appointments with no concern about being on time. We never double book and always try to allocate the right amount of time for each scheduled appointment. Our commitment to you is that we will and try to stay on time for all scheduled appointments.
How can you help? Please arrive early, at least 10 minutes, for your scheduled appointment. We know that road construction and other traffic problems can cause arrival time problems. Please account for these issues when you prepare to leave for your appointment. We appreciate calls telling us you will be late, however this ultimately does not help us stay on time. Late arrivals often put our schedules behind and this results in an inconvenience to the clients that have arrived on schedule. Therefore, if you are late, regardless of the reason, we will work with you to reallocate your appointment to another time, another doctor, or, as a last resort, another day. One option we will offer is to keep your pet while you run errands or pick up the kids. When you return we will discuss what was done and send you on your way. There will be no additional charge for the short office stay. WE ARE GOING TO DO ALL THAT WE CAN TO SEE THAT ALL APPOINTMENTS STAY ON TIME. PLEASE DO YOUR PART BY BEING EARLY WHICH WILL HELP US STAY ON SCHEDULE.
