OVERNIGHT IS A SPECIAL time
at Sylvania Vet. We have raised the level of patient care to an
extraordinary level. During the week your pet is never alone when
it is in our care. We have scheduled three of our techs to cover
this important shift. Christy, Courtney and Sarra provide care to
your pet when it is boarded or hospitalized. They will also be providing
advice and assistance to our answering service when the service
receives an after hours call.
CATS DO NOT CAUSE asthma
according to a study funded by the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Disease. The study actually found that high levels
of cat allergen decreased the risk of asthma by altering the humans'
immune response to cats. If it is ever recommended that you get
rid of a cat to prevent a family member's asthma, this study may
prevent the emotional loss of a pet. For more information visit

DR BOB ATTENDED a
four day professional meeting in Kansas City last month. The Central
Veterinary Conference is a great meeting covering topics in all
areas of medicine and surgery as well as the human/companion animal
bond. Dr Bob brought home new ideas on patient care and client service
as well as some new, useful equipment.
ASK THE VET is
a column that is being run in Parent Magazine. We are using this
forum to answer pet related questions. We would like your questions,
comments and pictures of your pets and kids. We will try to answer
your questions and use your picture in future issues.
BABY FOOD is
not a good choice for your cat. Many baby foods have onion added
and that can make what we perceive as healthy food a health hazard.
Onion can cause a cat to develop anemia, which may be fatal. We
do not recommend that you use baby food to feed your cat. There
are quality pet food supplements to give to your pet if it is not
eating. Ask us what to feed your cat if it needs nutritional support.
TEAM SYLVANIAVET actually
fielded two triathlon teams again this year. Last season our teams
did well and finished but were able to beat no other teams. This
year team 1 finished fourth in its division, the family team. Dr.
Bob's son-in-law, Josh Saum, swam, Dr Bob biked, and his daughter,
Tricia, ran. Team 2 was a victor in its division, mixed members,
and second overall. Anna Saum swam, Kevin Esplin biked, and Matt
Esplin ran. Good job everyone. Thanks to all who sponsored Team
Sylvania Vet to help Paws and Whiskers Feline Shelter. Start planning
now to be a member of Team SylvaniaVet.
DON'T GIVE UP on
a good thing too quickly. There is lots of advertising for the new
heartworm injectable, Proheart. We have elected to not recommend
this product. Recently, we saw a pet with a severe reaction to Proheart
after another practice had injected the pet. We are not ready to
have you loose internal parasite control, a manufacturers guarantee,
and the safety of 15 years of proven safety and efficacy. We will
continue to watch Proheart but we still feel the monthly preventives,
Heartgard Plus and Interceptor are the best choice for heartworm
prevention.
DOG JOG IS SCHEDULED for
next month. We will be sending a special e-mail to everyone with
all the details in the next 10 days. Plan now to bring your pet
and some of its friends to celebrate the joy of owning a dog. We
will have a great time and hopefully bring some joy to others' lives.
All proceeds from this years dog jog will go to Team Greyhound.
PET LOSS SUPPORT group
is resuming its twice monthly meetings. These group sessions are
open to anyone who needs assistance dealing with the emotions of
losing a pet or learning their pet has a terminal disease. Staff
member, Claudia Lamanna, is the facilitator of our group sessions.
Studies have shown that pet owners suffer the five steps of grieving
when they loose their beloved animal. Therefore, it is not unusual
to need some help getting through the grief. Our pet support program
is another service unique to Sylvania Veterinary Hospital.
FLEA WORLD is
the name of an external parasite research lab at Heska Corp. in
Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. Bob visited this lab recently and was
impressed by how basic flea control research is conducted. This
research is conducted to learn more about flea control as well as
flea allergy. They are also learning about house dust mite allergy.
A few fleas facts might be interesting. Fleas jump, not fly and
they can live several days after emerging from their pupa before
eating. Once a flea eats it will starve if it goes more than four
hours without eating again. Fleas rarely leave the animal once they
are on their mobile banquet. Flea pupas are about 1-2 mm in diameter.
If you have fleas in your house they are near the bottom of the
pile in the carpet.
HAVE
A GREAT SEPTEMBER
