May 2003 FYI

Be sure to give your dog and cat its monthly heartworm medication and to apply their frontline plus flea and tick control

TWENTY-FIVE YEAR membership award was given to Dr. Bob by the American Animal Hospital Association at their annual meeting in March. This award signifies the long-term commitment to excellence in all levels of veterinary care. Sylvania Vet is still the only area practice that meets the exacting standards of patient care, hospital cleanliness, record keeping and medical standards that are required by AAHA. Every four years the hospital is subjected to an on-site inspection to insure that all the standards of membership are being met. No other area hospital is inspected and certified by any governing body. We are proud to demonstrate our commitment to you and your pet through our AAHA membership.

BE SURE TO READ all your receipts each time you check out from a visit. There is usually helpful information included about the treatments performed on your pet. Side effects of medication, bandage care and of course vaccine due dates are but a few of the items covered on invoice notes.

WE HAVE HIRED a new doctor. Dr. Kirsten Love, a new graduate of the University of Minnesota vet school, will be joining our staff July 1. She has extensive background in avian and exotic pet care as well as a great general medical/surgical background. Welcome, Kirsten, we are excited to have you join our caring staff. On a less joyous note Dr Amy has elected to not have her contract renewed when her current obligation ends in mid-July. Therefore, we are still looking for another doctor. There are several candidates that we will have interviewed by May 15.

MEMORIES LIVE ON ANIMAL FOUNDATION was recently recorded with the State of Ohio by Dr. Bob. The foundation is the charitable fund started to manage the memorial garden planned for the new hospital grounds. The foundation will be accepting donations in the name of family pets, selling memorial bricks and wind chimes, and sponsoring fund raising events to finance four funds within the foundation.

  • DR BOB AND CAROL FUND WILL PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS TO PRE-VET STUDENTS FROM AREA HIGH SCHOOLS
  • DUDLEY FUND WILL SPONSOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ANIMAL THERAPY PROGRAM. MONIES WILL ALSO BE USED TO PROMOTE THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND IN THE COMMUNITY.
  • SUKI FUND WIL PROVIDE MONEY FOR STRAY SICK AND INJURED ANIMALS.
  • DAQUARI-TOO FUND WILL MAKE DONATIONS TO PET RELATED CHARITIES AND ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANIZATIONS OF THE FOUNDATIONS CHOOSING.

We will begin making donations to the fund in the memory of deceased pets soon. You will be able to make donations and purchase bricks by the end of June. In the spring of 2004 we will have a formal dedication of the memorial garden and the placement of the first memorial bricks and wind chimes. We encourage you to e-mail Dr. Bob to learn more about the Memories Live On Animal Foundation at drbob@sylvaniavet.com

FATTY FOOD DIET fed to coonhound puppies is advancing the knowledge of how fat in diets affect children. The study fed groups of coonhounds high, moderate and low amounts of oxidized fats. The high and moderate groups showed reduced growth, bone formation and immune function. This tells us we need to watch the amount of hard fat (animal fat) given to both our puppies and kids.

NEW STANDARDS ESTABLISHED BY AAHA in six brand-new areas. The six areas that the AAHA is addressing in their new standards are client services, continuing education, pain management, patient care and compliance, practice leadership, and surgery. There is no question that both you and your pets will benefit greatly from the new tougher standards.

PRACTICE MANAGER TO BE HIRED to help run the new hospital. We will be interviewing and hiring a qualified person to manage the non-medical aspects of the practice. We are looking for someone with experience in human resources, inventory control, customer service training, finance and employee supervision. If you know anyone that might be interested have him or her send a resume to Dr. Bob at the hospital. There is no time line on hiring our practice manager.

TICK SEASON HAS ARRIVED WITH THE ARRIVEAL OF WARMER WEATHER. Frontline Plus is still the most effective and safest topical product available to prevent and kill ticks. It is most effective when it is on your pet preventively. Other products do not work as well and do not survive bathing as well, and might be toxic if misapplied. We do not stock a large number of products; rather we investigate the products available and choose what is best for our patients. This enables us to sell you high quality products less expensively than most other sources.

REVOLUTION IS AVAILABLE for cats as a monthly heartworm preventive. If your cat has been unwilling to eat the chewable Heartgard for Cats we have stocked Revolution. Revolution is a topical product that is absorbed through the skin. It is effective during this absorption period against heartworm larva. It then works against fleas. We are not convinced that the flea control aspect of Revolution is highly effective. You may still need to purchase Frontline Plus for cats.

MORE DISCUSSION ABOUT ON-LINE pharmacy, Pet-Med Express is in order. There was a lot of advertising from this company on CNN during the Iraq War. If the number of requests for scripts from this pharmacy is an indication, many people were watching CNN. Whenever we get a prescription request from the pharmacy we always call the client. It is rare that the prices quoted by PET-Med Express are better than ours. If you complain then PME will match our price. If you cannot save significant money why would you want to support a company that is taking your money to help pay for national advertising, state and federal fines. In a personal way purchases from PME hurt our practice and affect our ability to provide your pet with the highest quality care. If we agreed to meet PME's prices we would have to charge you more. The following comparisons show their prices and ours for identical quantities of the same products.
