June 2001

Welcome to this month's Sylvania Veterinary Hospital newsletter. As always we are anxious for your input about all aspects of our web site. Please take a few minutes to send comments to our web master, www.info@sylvaniavet.com. We are anxious to spread the word about Sylvaniavet.com. Remember, there are great gifts for every new client you send us.

LOOK FOR SIGNS FOR OUR PICNIC LOCATION. BRING YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PET'S PICTURE ALBUM. FOOD, BEVERAGE AND DESSERT WILL BE PROVIDED. PLEASE RSVP BY 7-25-01 AT 885-4421 OR www.info@sylvaniavet.com

We have recently added a new service to our routine grooming care. All dogs and cats that are groomed and bathed by Melissa, Ashley and Kelly receive a free Hydro-surge warm water massage. Older pet's sore, stiff joints and muscles may actually feel better after their grooming bath. Regular, non-grooming, hydro-massage and baths can be scheduled through grooming. Ask our grooming solon staff for details.

You may not be aware of the amount of service your pet receives when it is cared for by the grooming staff. All dogs and cats are brushed, bathed, massaged, blown dry, trimmed, nails trimmed, anals expressed, ears plucked and cleaned and teeth checked at each grooming visit. If any pet is with us over 3-4 hours they are walked, given water and a healthy snack. You may pick them up when they are done or arrive after work. Not all groomers include as much service in their basic grooming fee.

WE WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON SEVERAL ANIMAL RELATED SUBJECTS THAT HAVE RECENTLY BEEN IN THE NEWS. MANY TIMES THE REPORTS HAVE BEEN LESS THAN ACCURATE OR ALARMIST IN NATURE. WE ARE AWARE OF MOST OF WHAT IS SAID OR PUBLISHED IN THE MEDIA AND ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.

DATELINE RECENTLY AIRED A SHOW ABOUT A NEW JERSEY VETERINARIAN THAT WAS ACCUSED OF ANIMAL ABUSE. THERE ARE SEVERAL POINTS THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE. THE DOCTORS CONVICTION WAS OVERTURNED ON APPEAL. THE TAPE THAT WAS USED IN HIS COURT TRIAL WAS A SHORT COMPILATION OF SEVERAL HUNDRED HOURS OF REGULAR DAILY WORK IN HIS OFFICE. THE ACCUSING ORGANIZATION COULD NOT PRODUCE THE ORGINAL TAPES AND IS BEING SUED BY THE DOCTOR. TO REASSURE YOU, NO ONE IN OUR PRACTICE ABUSES ANY PET AT ANY TIME, NO MATTER HOW DIFFICULT.

THERE ARE MANY SOURCES OUTSIDE OUR PRACTICE THAT WILL SELL VETERINARY PRODUCTS. IN MANY CASES THAY ARE DOING SO WITHOUT THE OK OF THE MANUFACTURER. AS A RESULT THE SUPPORT THE COMPANY PROVIDES TO THE PURCHASER IS VOID. REBATES, FREE GOODS, OR GUARANTEES ARE VOIDED. IF YOU CHECK, YOU WILL FIND THAT OUR PRICES ARE NOT MUCH DIFFERENT THAN ANY OF THE OUT OF STATE SUPPLIERS; IN SOME CASES THEY ARE LOWER. WE ARE ALSO HERE TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS AND STAND BEHIND OUR SALE.

LEPTOSPIROSIS WAS RECENTLY HIGHLIGHTED ON A LOCAL TV STATION. WE ARE PROVIDING PROTECTION AGAINST ALL STRAINS OF LEPTO AS YOUR DOG COMES IN FOR ITS REGULAR BOOSTER. THOUGH THERE IS LEPTO BEING REPORTED IN OUR AREA, THERE IS NO EPIDEMIC OR LARGE OUT BREAK. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS DO NOT HESITATE TO CALL OR E-MAIL US. www.info@sylvaniavet.com

It is always helpful to know what to do in an emergency. Be assured that we are here for you when an emergency occurs. Just call the office and our answering service will call or page us. If it is late they will ask you if the problem is serious enough to wake the doctor on call. Do not hesitate to say yes if your pet is experiencing a medical emergency. We have stickers with all our numbers on them. Ask for one the next time you are in.

You may use aspirin for pain in your dog or cat. It is the only safe over-the-counter pain medication for your pet. DO NOT use Aleve, Tylenol, Advil or other readily available pain medications. The aspirin dose for dogs is: 1 adult tablet per 40 lbs of body weight. Cats can be given 1 baby aspirin but no more unless advised to do so by a doctor.

You may give kaopectate to your pet for diarrhea. You cannot give too much, but 1 tsp. per 20 pounds is a good place to start.

If there is vomiting or diarrhea withhold food and water until you talk to the doctor.

Bleeding wounds should have a pressure wrap applied to control bleeding and keep it clean.

Happy Father's Day from all of us at
SYLVANIA VETERINARY HOSPITAL
