July 2001

Welcome to this month's Sylvania Veterinary Hospital newsletter. As always we are anxious for your input about all aspects of our web site. Please take a few minutes to send comments to our web master, www.info@sylvaniavet.com. We are anxious to spread the word about Sylvaniavet.com. Remember, there are great gifts for every new client you send us.

IT'S PARTY TIME! Friday, July 27 we are all gathering at Wildwood Metropark, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM, to say goodbye to Dr Kelly and hello to Dr. Amy. Look for the signs directing you to our picnic site. The hospital will provide all the food and drink. Bring a book of your favorite pet pictures to share with others. The entire family is invited. Please let us know how many will attend by July 24. Call 885-4421 to make reservations.

PICTURES OF YOUR KIDS AND YOUR PETS! Dr Bob asks that you submit pictures of your kids and your pets to be included in his Ask the Vet column in Parents Newspaper. He would also like your feed back on the column. He answers questions about pet care and pet ownership. Feel free to e-mail your questions to Dr. Bob at Drbob@sylvaniavet.com

PAWS-AND-WHISKERS NEEDS HELP! July 20 PAWS-AND-WHISKERS Feline Shelter has the opportunity to raise funds for their shelter at the Rally by the River. They will be serving refreshments to the partygoers. To maximize their receipts they need over 100 volunteers to fill numerous jobs at the Rally's refreshment stands. You can help by volunteering to work at the rally. You must be 21 years old. Call 885-4421 or call PAWS at 536-1914 to help.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LEPTOSPIROSIS!
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by an organism called a spirochete. The organism can be spread by a large number of wild animals common to all our neighborhoods. Rodents, deer, squirrels, opossums, raccoons are but a few of the carriers of Leptospirosis. Lepto can be deadly to dogs that are infected. Depending on the strain of Lepto, the dog's blood, liver or kidneys can be infected. It is not felt that cats are at risk from Leptospirosis. Lepto can be transmitted to humans.
DHLPPC, the multiple disease vaccine we have given to your dogs has contained two strains of Leptospirosis bacterin. Until recently, this has been adequate to protect your pet against this potentially serious disease. However, recent reports have shown an upsurge of Leptospirosis disease in our area. Additionally, new serovars (strains) of the disease have been implicated. We have added these new strains of Leptospirosis to your dogs annual vaccine program. The two new serovars, grippotyphosa and pomona, need to be boostered 3-4 weeks after the initial vaccination. This booster is given by our techs, at a scheduled appointment. You pay only for the vaccine, no office call, if the booster is given at a tech visit.
THERE IS NOT AN EPIDEMIC OF LEPTO IN OUR AREA BUT IS HAS BEEN REPORTED. WE HAVE SEEN TWO CASES.
YOU MAY HAVE THE Lepto gp BOOSTER GIVEN SEPARATELY FROM YOUR DOGS ANNUAL DHLPPC BOOSTER. WE RECOMMEND THAT YOU STRONGLY CONSIDER THIS OPTION. THERE WILL BE A WELLNESS CALL FOR THE FIRST OF TWO SHOTS.

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH! June was a repeat honor for Brenda. She works in the kennel and gives every one of your pets boarded and hospitalized with us tender loving care. To paraphrase Allstate, your pet is in good hands with Brenda.
Help us elect each employee of the month. If any of our team gives you or your pet extraordinary service you may cast a vote for that employee. Ask any employee for a ballot.

LABMED! There are many worthy animal related charities. One rescue organization, LABMED, provides funds to care for sick or injured rescued Labs. They can be contacted at info@labmed.org. More can be learned about LABMED at their web site, www.labmed.org

SYLVANIA TRIATHLON! It is not too late to support Dr. Bob and Team Sylvaniavet in this year's Triathlon. Everyone that pledges a minimum of $25.00 to PAWS will receive a gift from the office. All those that make that pledge will also be eligible for one of five great prizes to be drawn randomly from the triathlon supporters. This year's team will be a family affair. Josh Saum, Dr Bob's son-in-law, will swim, biking will be Dr. Bob and Tricia Saum will run. All proceeds will be applied to PAWS medical bill. A corporate sponsor will match $1.00 for each $3.00 pledged. Lets spend a lot of those corporate dollars by pledging generously to PAWS.

CONGRATULATIONS! MELISSA FRANCISCO, OUR GROOMER, IS GETTING MARRIED THIS MONTH. WE ARE HAPPY TO SHARE HER JOY ON THIS VERY SPECIAL DAY. BE SURE TO PASS ON BEST WISHES THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE YOUR PET GROOMED.

FLEAS! July is the unofficial beginning of flea season. Now until Thanksgiving will be seeing many pets with a flea infestation. If you wish to exclude you dog or cat from the ranks of "fleafestation" we recommend starting Frontline Topspot now. Ask any team member about flea control advice.
You may find Frontline at pet stores and Andersons. They are not legally selling this product. The manufacturer will not stand behind the product when not purchased through a veterinarian. Also, you will pay more for each dose than if you buy it from us. We will also be here to stand behind our recommendations. When you buy six doses of Frontline from us you get a seventh dose free. Stores or mail order sources cannot match this offer.
SYLVANIA VETERINARY HOSPITAL SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST STOP FOR FLEA CONTROL ADVICE OR PRODUCTS.

Have a fun and safe summer
