February 2003 FYI

Don't forget to give your dog its monthly heartworm preventive

FEBRUARY IS BOTH DENTAL AND SPAY MONTH nationally. Veterinarians throughout the country are encouraged to use this time to educate the public about the importance of both these critical pet health issues. Our staff recognizes the importance of dental care and spaying and neutering. Rather than put a special emphasis on either issue in February, for us every month is dental care and spay/neuter month. Let's take a few words to emphasize the importance of two procedures that contribute mightily to your pet's longevity and quality of life.

DENTAL CARE is the single most important health care you can perform at home to prolong your pet's life and your enjoyment of your companion. The most effective home care is daily brushing of your dogs' and cats' teeth and gums. It is best to start their detnal care when you get your new puppy or kitten, however with time, patience and persistence the majority of pets will allow you to brush their teeth. It is best to use special pet safe toothpaste; human paste can irritate the animal's stomach when swallowed. Two dietary products will help control dental disease in dogs and cats. Eukanuba diets with the dental care system are an excellent choice for high quality nutrition and assistance with dental care. Hills Prescription Diet T/D is an excellent food that helps to mechanically remove tartar from pet's teeth. They may be used in combination. Regular dry food does very little to assist in dental care. Dogs can benefit from a variety of chew toys. We recommend Kongs, gummy bones, ropes, Greenies and CET Cheweez. Finally, elective dental prophy to clean, polish and apply fluoride is the best way to control advancing gum and periodontal disease. We are so dedicated to high quality dental care that we have allocated a separate room in the new hospital for dental care. There will be two prophy tables with the most modern ultrasound scalers.
SPAY/NEUTER is best done to your dog or cat before they have their first heat cycle. Sexual maturity usually occurs between 7-9 months of age. Which leads to our recommendation of doing the surgery at about six months. We see no advantage and some increased risk for these procedures at an earlier age. When a pet is spayed it is having a major abdominal procedure to have its ovaries and the entire uterus removed. Not only have we eliminated unwanted heat cycles, pregnancies and unwanted babies, your female pet will have no chance of a uterine infection and a decreased chance of mammary cancer. Male dogs and cats are castrated. By removing the testicles the pet will be less territorial, less aggressive, have less strong smelling urine and decreased chances of prostate cancer and perianal adenomas. All dogs and cats that are not show animals or breeding stock should be spayed or neutered.

CITY OF SYLVANIA has annexed the property where we are going to build our new hospital. This enables us to get sewer and water service from the city without any hassles. We are happy to remain a Sylvania City business.

LOTS OF FIREWOOD could be available on the new hospital property. There are several large hardwood trees that must be taken down before we can develop the lot. If anyone has the expertise and equipment to fell trees and transport the wood they can contact Dr. Bob at the office, 419-885-4421 or drbob@sylvaniavet.com

DR ROSS WILL BE ATTENDING an advanced orthopedic course in May that will allow us to begin providing bone plating fracture repair. This advanced care requires an investment in special equipment and instruments. The new hospital with two surgery suites will enable us to add this advanced surgical care. Until we gain this expertise we will continue to refer a pet with a severe fracture to a specialist. Currently, there is no practice in our area offering bone plating.

PHYSICAL REHABILITATION will be the next frontier in veterinary medicine. Many orthopedic procedures, limb injuries, and back problems will benefit greatly from rehab. Our underwater treadmill will be the first in NW Ohio and one of only 50 throughout the US. There will be other patients that can benefit from the treadmill. Over weight, arthritic dogs will be able to exercise more easily. Winter training for working dogs is also anticipated. A session in the hydrotub will be a special treat for dogs in boarding.

SEND YOUR FRIENDS to Sylvania Vet. We are always looking for new clients that want only the best for the family pet. We have a special "Thank You" program for clients that regularly refer family, friends and neighbors. The ultimate reward is an 11 per cent discount on all veterinary fees for all your pets for one year. When you know of someone that just moved in, have a new pet or would like to meet a new vet, be sure to speak right up and say, "You should go where I go, Sylvania Veterinary Hospital". If you would like information to introduce someone to us before they decide, you may stop in and ask for a "Welcome to the Practice" folder.

EUKANUBA PET FOODS made by Iams Company is offering two months free pet insurance with their new puppy and kitten kits. We have the kits and will be offering them to clients with new pets. We think this is a great deal as Eukanuba is a superior food and the VPI insurance policy is the real deal. VPI is the insurance we encourage all clients to investigate.

RINGWORM is not a worm but a skin fungal disease. There are several species of ringworm fungi that can cause disease in your dog or cat. The skin disease is more common in kittens then puppies. Adults are less frequently affected by ringworm. Ringworm is transmissible to people. Treatment is prolonged and can take up to six weeks to clear. Topical, oral and dip treatments are used to clear ringworm. The disease is diagnosed by the skin lesion appearance, a greenish glow when exposed to a black light, and a special skin culture. Ringworm is rarely itchy and rarely causes a ring-like lesion.

POULTRY PRICES may soar in the near future based on information Dr. Tate has learned from her V-Mat team meetings. An outbreak of exotic Newcastle's Disease virus in millions of California birds has lead to their destruction. The problem is out of control and the state and federal veterinarians are losing ground to the advancing disease. National crisis teams, V-Mat, are being readied to be deployed to California to help get the problem under control. Dr Tate may be gone in March for up to two weeks if her team is sent to California.

TOPICAL FLEA CONTROL containing Permethrins like Hartz topical flea control, Biospot and Advantix should be used with caution. The permethrin is highly toxic to cats and must never be used on a feline. The permethrin is not terribly stable when exposed to light, water or soap. Therefore, it may not last as long as needed before it can be applied again. We still feel that Frontline Topspot is the best and safest topical flea and tick control available. We have great prices on all Topspot sizes. Remember that your veterinarian is the best source of parasite control advice.

COST OF VET EDUCATION and the student's debt load are soaring. Prospective students can expect in-state tuition to be between $10,000-15,000 per year. Debt load for the new graduate is expected to be over $42,000. The new grad will spend over 10% of their income on debt service. One recent study indicated that if the cost of education continued to rise at the same rate and the income of veterinarians remained on the same course the cost of debt service would take the students entire income by the year 2017. We encourage students interested in veterinary medicine and their parents to learn about the economics of going to vet school and the income potential of the new graduate and experienced veterinarian. Additionally, we encourage all students to learn what veterinary medicine is all about. It is not enough to love pets and want to help them. Early exploration of what being a vet is all about will help students to make intelligent career choices. Currently, we have five high school students volunteering and learning about what we feel is a great and rewarding career.

SYLVANIA VET STAFF is committed to continued improvement. Each member is encouraged to read and report on all aspects of their jobs including medical knowledge and customer service. Each member earns "frequent flyer" points for each learning opportunity. They can then redeem their points for cash and dinner for two. Last year Dr. Bob awarded dinner and cash to 10 staff members. We feel that our ability to help you and your pet is enhanced by this individual personal learning of each team member. When we have an occasion to call other offices for information we are surprised how little the staff members we talk to know about the question we ask. We encourage you to try this little comparison shopping experiment and let us know what you learn.

WEIGHT LOSS AND EXERCISE will enable your older arthritic dog to move more quickly and exert more force on their limbs. Movement with less stiffness and pain was also observed in dogs as they lost weight, and got in shape. Ten extra pounds of body weight will increase the forces on your dog's joints by 40%. Our physical rehabilitation department will incorporate our treadmill with other weight control modalities in the new hospital.

AMERICAN ANIMAL HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION will honor Sylvania Veterinary Hospital for 25 years of membership in March 2003. This is significant in that it reflects our commitment to the highest level of patient care. AAHA standards are easy to meet if one is willing to make a commitment to top quality medicine and surgery. One cannot cut corners and meet AAHA standards. Our office is the only AAHA certified practice in NW Ohio. Our membership is a matter of great pride to the entire staff. We hope you are comforted to know that your pet is cared for by a practice that cares enough to meet the highest professional standards.

HYDROSURGE BATHING TECHNOLOGY is utilized by our grooming department to give your dog or cat the most comfortable and cleanest bath. Kelly says, "Dogs just relax and seem to really enjoy the shower-massage-like effect of our hydorsurge". Every pet that is cared for by Ashley and Kelly receive this special advanced bathing technology whenever they are groomed at Sylvania Vet. Coats are cleaner when hydrosurge is used to bathe your pet.
