FEBRUARY 2002 FYI
CAVALCADE OF CATS household
cat show is scheduled for Sunday February 17, 2002. Our sixth annual
show will be held from 9AM-4:30PM at Gladieux Meadows 4480 Heatherdowns
Blvd. Toledo, Oh. If you would like to enter your cat please check
with the office immediately as we have very few openings available.
For information call 419-885-4421 or go to our Events Calendar on
the website. Cats of all ages, sizes, and appearance will be competing
in three rings for prizes. Your feline family member could be a
winner. The purpose of the cat show is to promote healthy cat ownership
and celebrate the joy of owning a cat. All proceeds of the cat show
will be split between Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet and Paws and Whiskers
Feline Shelter. These organizations will be showing cats that will
be available for adoption. Help us raise $5000 to donate to these
worthy organizations. There will be door prizes for selected paying
spectators. Many vendors will display for sale, cat toys and collectibles.
PLEASE PUT THE CAVALCADE OF CATS ON YOUR CALANDAR SUNDAY FEB. 17.
Tell your friends and bring a car full to the cat show. Admission
is adults, $5.00, seniors $4.00, children under 15, $3.00
DID YOU KNOW that we
could help if someone in your family has been diagnosed with an
allergy to pets? Recent research has shown that children raised
with dogs and cats are less likely to develop pet allergies and
asthma. Studies have determined that it is the protein in saliva
that causes the allergic reaction. Dander and hair are not as big
a concern that many assume. We have a product, that when added to
a cats food daily, decreases the allergic reaction to the pets saliva.
Many of our clients are currently benefiting from ace allergy drops.
Common sense dictates that if you are allergic, do not allow a pet
in your bedroom or on the furniture, do not put your face to their
face or body, do not allow them to lick you and wash your hands
after petting your animal. If we can help you with pet allergies
please call, 419-885-4421.
NEW EQUIPMENT has been
added to our state of the art hospital. In the last month we have
acquired a new anesthesia machine, giving us five isoflurane machines.
We have purchased but have yet received an intensive care cage for
our small patients. The cage will allow ambient temperature control,
oxygen supplementation and a nebulizer. Critical care patients;
c-section puppies or kittens, birds or reptiles will be helped with
our new cage. Finally, we purchased a Devillbis oxygen generator
machine. We will have an unlimited supply of oxygen for high-risk
patients in our critical care cage or with an oxygen nasal catheter.
GLYCOSAMINE AND CHONDROITIN
are nutriceutical supplements recommended for arthritic joint pain.
Very few scientific studies verify the positive benefits of these
products. However, a building mountain of anecdotal claims by both
people and pet owners support the benefits of glycosamine and chondroitin.
We recommend these joint supplements in pets suffering the effects
of stiff, sore, arthritic joints. Recently, we elected to recommend
and sell only Cosequin. This decision was made because the manufacturer
of Cosequin is the only producer that has tested and submitted efficacy
proof to the government. Nutriceuticals are not regulated by any
government organization. Therefore, they do not have to label the
product, give doses, or for that matter put in their product what
the product says it contains. A recent study of 31 joint supplements
showed that only seven actually contained what the label indicated
was present. Cosequin was the only veterinary-labeled product on
the list.
AUSTIC CHILDREN were
found to respond better to their tasks and environment when a therapy
dog was included in their treatment sessions. The study of pet facilitated
therapy and austic children was funded by the Pet Care Trust and
was run by the Pet-People Partnership at Washington State's College
of Veterinary Medicine. Those of us who love pets and have our spirits
lifted daily by petting, hugging and caring for our them could have
told the researchers what they would learn. However, the more scientific
evidence that is accumulated supports the value of pets to all of
us in our busy and hectic lives. In the future Dr. Bob will be preparing
a presentation on the benefits of pets in all our lives. He will
be available to present his program to your organization. If you
are interested in inviting him to speak please contact him at drob@sylvaniavet.com
NICOLE KOENINGSCHECT,
a senior veterinary student at the other OSU, Oklahoma State, has
been interning with us since mid-January. She has proved to be very
knowledgeable and personable. She has done a number of spays and
neuters for PAWS Feline Shelter. Her grandparents live in Ida, Mi.
She has been staying with them. We are always excited to teach and
learn from vet students.
ANTIBIOTIC PULSE THERAPY
is a highly effective tool we use to help manage dental disease
in your dogs and cats. When a pet's mouth becomes infected, leading
to gum disease and periodontal disease brushing and other prophy
procedures are not enough. We will recommend, Antirobe, antibiotic
pulse therapy the first five days of each month when routine care
is no longer enough. Coupled with other dental care, pulse therapy
will slow tartar and plaque development and the severe organ damage
chronic dental infection can cause.
REPTILE OWNERSHIP AND SALES
has been targeted by the Humane Society of the US for elimination.
We feel that this is an extreme recommendation and an over zealous,
anti-pet ownership position. Those of us that enjoy animals of all
types should be offended by this legislative effort. We should consider
withdrawing support of Humane Society of the US projects if they
continue to pursue this vendetta. On the other side, owners of reptiles
should give them the same level of care and attention that we give
to our dogs and cats. Reptiles and birds are special animals and
require owner education and veterinary care. No pet store is qualified
to offer feeding, housing, or medical advice to you. Call us before
you buy a bird or reptile, we can help you make the right decision.
GREAT PET STORIES happen
almost daily at Sylvania Veterinary Hospital. Late last month Dr.
Ross and Dr. Bob combined with Team Toledo Greyhound Rescue to help
a newly acquired dog. It seems Brandy would vomit almost every time
it ate dry food. Our work up showed that she had a congenital defect
called persistent right aortic arch. The abnormal strip of tissue,
which should have disappeared at birth, had trapped the esophagus,
the tube taking food from the mouth to he stomach. The stricture
would not allow dry food past and the dog would bring it back up.
Delicate chest surgery was performed to remove the stricture. Brandy's
surgery was a success and she is now able to eat a complete diet,
including dry food. Sylvania Vet gave Team Toledo a substantial
discount but they never hesitated to ok the expensive surgery for
Brandy. We all feel great about Brandy's case. If this story makes
you feel good why not consider a donation to Team Toledo Greyhound
Rescue?
WILDWOOD METROPARK'S
new section, east of the main entrance is a great place to walk
your dog. The trails are wide and well maintained. A beautiful,
elevated boardwalk, with a covered bridge, connects to the trails
in the main park. During the winter, when sloppy weather makes walking
your dog a chore, the Wildwood trails are a good way to get out
and enjoy a healthful walk. All-weather restrooms are in the newly
constructed meeting facility. A seasonal water fountain is there
for human and canine walkers.
WE HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU. A
handy wallet calendar is yours for the asking at the front desk.
Stop in for the gift or be sure to ask for one any time you have
and appointment. This is a small way for us to thank you for making
2001 a great year for Sylvania Vet.
HANDMADE CATNIP MICE
are always available at the front desk. A retiree makes these cat
toys for us in batches of 50. There are times when we cannot seem
to keep them in stock. The cost of these items is $2.00.
OUR BLOOD BANK HAS HAD ITS
FIRST WITHDRAWALS. Scully and Tessla were the first two patients
to receive a life saving transfusion from our blood bank. Our ability
to save their lives was greatly enhanced by having typed and cross-matched
blood on hand. Immediate availability of whole blood is another
sign of Sylvania Veterinary Hospital's commitment to the health
of your pet. We are still looking for dogs to be part of our blood
donor pool. If you would like your dog to be considered for our
life saving Corp contact Dr. Tate at drjen@sylvaniavet.com or call
the office 419-885-4421
