December 2001 FYI

SANTA IS COMING SATURDAY, December 8, from 2-6 PM for studio quality portrait pictures with your pet. In addition to the beautiful 5x7 picture other forms of pictures will be available. Key chains, Christmas cards, wallet sized, and plaques of your pet and the jolly one will be available. The initial picture is $9.00. A donation to Maumee Valley Save A Pet will be made for each pet portrait taken. Call the office, 419- 885-4421, to reserve a sitting.

BLOOD DONORS are still needed. We have completed screening tests on our first six dogs. Only three of our first group of volunteers have usable blood types. We are in need of a total of 20 dogs to have a large enough donor pool. Dogs must be 1-7 years old and weigh at least 50 pounds. There is no cost for your dog to be a blood donor. We will blood type each dog. Those with appropriate types will then have full lab work done to assess its overall health. Help us save other dogs lives by enrolling your dog in the Sylvania Vet blood donor program. For more information contact Dr Jen at drjen@sylvaniavet.com

VETERINARY PET INSURANCE has expanded its coverage to include avian and exotic pets. VPI now has the most comprehensive coverage for all the pets we keep in our home. We encourage you to contact VPI and learn more about their pet insurance product. You may reach VPI at www.veterinarypetinsurance.com

NEW PET CONSULTATIONS are available from our staff to help you determine which breed of dog or cat would be a good choice for your family. We also have books and tapes that you can review to help you select the perfect pet. In addition, you may go to the AKC web site, www.akc.org, for good breed selection advice. A little homework will add to the years of enjoyment a pet will bring to your family.

A GIFT is waiting for you at our reception desk. We have had 2000 wallet-sized calendars printed for our clients. We appreciate each and every client and wish you a great 2002. We also have a supply of
"In Case of Fire" stickers that you may have for your home. Just ask any front desk person for one.

419-885-4421 is now the telephone number of Sylvania Veterinary Hospital. As you know we must now all dial the 419 area code for all local phone calls. Remember to dial 419-885-4421 when calling for an appointment.

SHEDDING is a major problem for those of us with pets that shed, i.e., most of us. Melissa, Ashley and Kelly are now using a grooming technique called carding to help remove excess hair from the pets they groom. There is a nominal additional charge for this technique, which will dramatically reduce the hair your pet looses around the house. Recently, Ashley did a dog that lost so much hair that one swipe of its coat left its owner's hand covered with hair. After a Hydro-surge bath and carding the owner was unable to wipe off any hair when she petted the dog. This is the best solution to shedding we have found; better than all the supplements that are available.

IS YOUR OLDER PET showing any of the following signs? If you have noticed Loss of housetraining, confusion/disorientation, less interaction with the family, decreased responsiveness, or changes in sleep patterns, you dog may have cognitive dysfunction. There is medication that we can prescribe to help your pet deal with changes you may have just chalked up to getting old.

GROUP GRIEF CONSUELING sessions are a unique caring service provided to our community by Sylvania Veterinary Hospital. Our certified grief counselor, Claudia Lamanna, facilitates the twice-monthly sessions. Everyone in need of help dealing with the loss of a beloved pet is welcome at the meetings. You do not need to be a client and we encourage families to come if they wish. Call the office, 419-885-4421, to learn more and find the day and location of the next session.

C-SECTION brings out the best in Sylvania Vet's dedicated staff. Recently, an English Bull dog was presented in labor. She could not deliver the first of the eight puppies she was carrying. Dr. Bob handled the surgery with Dr. Amy assisting. Certified techs, Lori and Emily, co-ordinated the entire support staff as puppies were rapidly delivered by c-section. Each puppy was assigned a nurse to give it the best chance of survival. Unfortunately, three puppies had congenital birth defects and did not survive. Mom and the rest of the puppies were sent home later that day. We are proud of how well the entire staff worked to help a mom in trouble.

PAWS FELINE SHELTER is doing a great of job caring for unwanted and abandoned cats. They have all their animals examined, blood tested for felv and/or, fecal tested and vaccinated against four infectious diseases. Additionally, they provide a discount voucher for discounted spay or neuter. Should an animal in their care become ill they make every attempt to have its disease diagnosed and treated. PAWS is a truly unique organization. As the holidays approach we suggest you consider a tax-deductible donation to PAWS. You may access their web site at www.pawsandwiskers.org

FERAL CAT SPAY/NEUTER program sponsored by Sylvania Vet is available to everyone who would like to control the stray cat population in their neighborhood. We will help you capture these nearly wild cats that can be a health hazard to your family. Once captured we will test the cat for felv/fiv, give it a Rabies vaccine, give a worm shot and spay or neuter. You will then return the cat to its territory. This neuter-release program has proven to be an effective method of decreasing the size of feral cat populations around the country. A recent study funded by Morris Animal Foundation supports the effectiveness of this program. From what we have learned about similar programs around the country Sylvania Vet's program is the most comprehensive and economical. The cost for the entire program is male, $60, female, $70. We encourage neighborhood groups to get together to fund control of the feral cat program in their neighborhood.

MAIL ORDER and e-commerce supply stores advertise extensively in the media. They claim that they will supply you with many pet products at bargain rates. In most cases this is so much advertising hyperbole and not based in fact. We encourage you to check with us before buying products from any of these sources. There are many facts that make a purchase from an online or catalog supplier less than desirable. Many items that are sold require an established client-doctor-patient relationship or a prescription from us. We will not fill this prescription without consulting with you. This is because we have learned that in most cases our prices are better. Additionally, any rebates or guarantees that come with the purchase through a veterinarian, will not be honored by the manufacturer, if purchased from outside sources. When we sell you a product or medication we are there to support your purchase. Will the outside supplier be able to support your questions or problems? Recently, a client had a prescription filled at Pet Med Express. Without authorization they substituted a generic medication. It is not approved for animal use and may not be as effective. Given this was heart medication this substitution could have been harmful. The reality was that Pet Med Express could not beat our price on the brand name product. Pet Med Express has paid fines for pharmacy regulation violations and is still under investigation for additional improprieties. We encourage you to not support Pet Med Express.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OF OUR VALUED CLIENTS
