HELP

Team Sylvaniavet triathlon needs sponsors. Dr. Bob and his son-in-law, Josh and daughter, Tricia have committed to the effort to complete the Sylvania Triathlon. Their effort is designed to raise money for PAWS-AND-WHISKERS feline shelter. Currently, sponsorships are lagging behind previous years. All sponsors will receive a gift from the hospital. Five lucky sponsors of over $25.00 each will be eligible for one of five great prizes. Call the office, 885-4421 to make your pledge.

ADOPTED

Last month the Sylvania police found a stray chocolate lab in a local parking lot. He turned out to be both healthy and abandoned. We could not find his family. He has now found a great home with one of our clients.

AVAILABLE

Not to be out done by the officers in blue, the tan clad Township police brought us a litter of kittens and their mother. They were found in the Meijer parking lot. Our caring staff provided all the effort necessary to nurse this beautiful group of four kittens to adoption age. They are now available for a fee of $50.00. The mom was spayed and is also ready to go to a new home. Call us for details.

PRO-HEART? NO!

Recently, a manufacturer of veterinary products introduced a new heartworm preventive, Pro-Heart. This is an injectable drug that is licensed to last 6 months. On the surface this sounds great but what is the rest of the story? We have elected to not purchase this product this year. All our doctors feel that Pro-Heart has several potential problems and hasn't been used enough for the USA to endorse this product.
There are several limitations that we are concerned about. It was tested on less than 500 dogs before it was approved for use. It has been used in Australia but the FDA does not recognize their governments drug approvals. It cannot be used on dogs less than 6 months old. Deaths have been reported in aged and weakened dogs. The product is injected under the skin of the neck. Short term localized pain and swelling has been reported. You lose the internal parasite control that has been achieved with the monthly medications. If shots are not given on time there is a period of susceptibility until the next shot is given. Fifteen years of success with the monthly heartworm, internal parasite medications should not be cast aside without serious consideration. It will not be less expensive, either.
We have other reasons to advise caution before using Pro-Heart on your dog. Don't hesitate to ask.

OVERNIGHT

Our unique and very special overnight staff has just been expanded. Monday through Friday we have a registered veterinary technician from 7PM to 7AM. Saturday and Sunday the night techs are in the office from 10PM to 5AM. This level of caring service is unmatched in any hospital in our area. Without this level of service no other hospital can manage difficult or intensive care cases. We will be utilizing this professional patient support in a variety of ways including "ask-a-nurse" type after hours support for pet owners with after hours concerns. We would like to know how important it is to you that your pet is supervised when we are closed. Please send your comments to drbob@sylvaniavet.com

CONGRATULATIONS

Melissa, our head groomer, is now Mrs. Wilson. In a beautiful ceremony Melissa was married June 28. The newlyweds spent a great honeymoon at Disney World. She is now back at work making your pets look beautiful and smell great.

DOCTOR AMY

The sadness we all feel about Dr. Kelly Lockerman leaving for Georgia is tempered by the arrival of Dr. Amy Estes. Amy started her first job July 17 and hit the ground running. She is very caring, personable and of course competent. When your are in take a minute to meet Dr Amy.
